Smart home, smart move

Mauritian construction company Building and Civil Engineering Ltd (BCE) has developed a "smart home" that can be built in 15 days. Yes, that's correct. How? The company uses precast walls and a predesigned floor plan.

The 61m² building comprises of two bedrooms, a bathroom, an open kitchen, a living and dining area as well as an extra room (office, computer room, extra bedroom: you name it).

The whole building comes with electrical wiring, running water and sewer, light fittings and PVC openings and is fully painted.

The best about it? It costs less than Rs1 million.

The smart home is a good solution for people who can't afford architects, which often results in very unpleasant concrete landscapes. The floor plan of the house is actually simple and very effective. Also, it can be a good solution for people who've lost their homes after a cyclone or flash flood.

I'm just hoping that they will soon offer 2 or 3 more floorplans (maybe 1,3 and 4-bedroom units) so that the smart home becomes a viable solution for many more people and so that it doesn't create "copy/pasted" neighbourhoods.

Watch how they do it:
